In this competitive IT market, just having the skill and the intelligence to lead you to the top is not enough.  There are a lot of talented managers out there, but the one who emerges is the one who has not only the skill, but the right attitude.  IT management is not only about being knowledgeable in the field, it is about having the ability to handle your subordinates well.  Below are some tips for effective IT management:

 

  1. Don't hesitate to express your thoughts and feelings and express them clearly.  IT management calls for an effective communication with your team.  Before saying anything, always organize your thoughts and plans.  Choose the best words to communicate your thoughts and try to be clear.  You should also be firm with expressing emotions especially when they are related to job responsibilities and instructions.
  2. Be empathic and be a good listener.  An effective IT manager is able to put himself in other people's shoes.  You should establish a kind of relationship that is based on professional mutual respect. When engaging in personal communication, do not appear preoccupied with some other thoughts.  You should always pay attention to the person you are talking to and give him your undivided attention.
  3. Try to postpone your evaluation when the need calls for it.  When your team member presents a new idea, don't be too hasty to evaluate his idea.  You should make sure that you have understood the whole idea before judging them.  Try to discipline yourself so that you postpone any form of evaluation until having fully understood all the aspects.
  4. When someone else's views are different from yours, don't become hostile to the idea. Employees and team members tend to learn a lot about their managers basing on how you react to opposing ideas.  (And remember how your body language tends to communicate louder).  If you appear to become distressed or threatened, your subordinates will rarely ever refute you in the future.  This is very unhealthy to the company as all your ideas will go untested and some good ideas will never come up and be considered.  IT is such a very dynamic field and new ideas can become wonderful, indispensable ones in the future.  Always be open to novel ideas and if new great ones are suggested, don't forget to give credit to where it's due.
  5. If necessary, engage in confrontations.  Conflict is very healthy in professional relationships.  If you encourage people to express themselves openly, you are bound to have some confrontations at one time or another.  However, you should channel conflicts into something productive, and remember not to hold grudges.
  6. Always bear a win-win mentality.  Don't allow yourself to get trapped in the win-lose mentality. When something goes wrong, learn to transcend it.  You must focus on ends rather than means. You should try to ask yourself whether conflicts, disagreements and differences in opinion achieves your team's goal and the company's.  If they don't, guide them into the right direction. 

 

Remember that good IT management is reflected in your team's performance.  Good team players reflect good managers.
